We approached the doctor while I tried to recall what his name was. He’d said it briefly when I sold him the sketch, but I hadn’t paid all that much attention.
The name came to me a second before I needed it to. “Brian, how are you enjoying the rest of the opening?”
He turned around to face us. Surprise registered on his features as he recognized Willa. “It’s a very pleasant evening, thank you. Willa, I didn’t know you were into art.”
I nodded at her for encouragement, but she still didn’t say anything. “Willa is a huge fan of all art, but Laird’s work in particular. We’re his neighbors. She tells me you work together.”
He focused on her as he replied to me. “We do. She’s the best nurse in the ward. I always request her when I put in for my shifts.”
I was getting more than work colleagues vibes rolling off him. He was into my roommate as much as she liked him. They were a match made in heaven, but both too shy to do anything about it. I didn’t need to be the goddess of love to know that—but it helped.
“Maybe you guys should get a drink after this? There’s a very nice bar on the corner of the street,” I said. They were so busy staring at each other I’m surprised they even heard me.
“That sounds really nice,” Brian replied. “Willa?”
She didn’t need nudging this time. “I’d really like that.”
“Excellent, off you both go.” I turned them around with a slight push, and they headed toward the door. Two people that suited one another needed to be together. They just needed a little help to get started.
The crowd thinned out afterward until there was nobody but Laird and I left. Rocky had finalized things with the caterers and declared his job done for the night. It seemed like a very large space without all the people in it now.
“You don’t have to hang around if you want to get home,” Laird said across the room. He was filling a tray with glasses that had been abandoned around the place.
“I’m not tired, so I don’t mind.” I grabbed a tray of my own and helped him. All the excitement of the night was still pumping adrenaline through my body. I couldn’t sleep even if I wanted to. I didn’t have a job to go to the next day now I was unemployed again so I could stay up as late as I wanted to.
We worked together, methodically cleaning up the place. Napkins with half-eaten pieces of food were the worst items to touch. Something about it made me want to gag. I wouldn’t have made a good servant.
Laird stopped at one point and stretched the kinks out of his back. “I can’t believe everything sold tonight.”
“Everything?”
He nodded with tired happiness. “Everything. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that would happen. My garage is filled with pieces that haven’t sold at previous exhibitions. I thought I would be adding to the collection with this one.
